About us
Umbrella Vinyl is a bricks-and-mortar second hand record shop and music label. Based in the vibrant neighbourhood of Tollcross in central Edinburgh it was founded in 2022 by three passionate record collectors. Its owners, Laura, Josh and Nick, pride themselves on it being an accessible space, welcoming all to share a love of music and records.

Our Story

Josh and Laura met Nick selling records at a Hong Kong music festival in 2015 and since then they have been sharing their love of music through record fairs, DJing, digging adventures and releasing music on vinyl together.
Umbrella Vinyl was born initially as a vinyl-only label in Edinburgh in 2022 when it released a 7โ single by Chris McGregorโs Brotherhood of Breath. We wanted a name that would acknowledge our shared Hong Kong past as well as our broad musical tastes and inclusive perspectives.
Our dream to open a bricks-and-mortar shop came true in August 2023. By design, it is an accessible, inclusive space where we comfortably share our love of music with the community. The three of us have pooled our favourite record-buying experiences to create a shop where digging for vinyl and discovering new music is a welcoming, pleasurable experience.
We have rapidly gained an enviable reputation for seeking out and stocking an unparalleled selection of rare and exciting records from all over the globe, as well as those familiar favourites, to suit all budgets. We love sharing our suggestions and always encourage customers to listen to our records on our dedicated turntables at our listening stations.
The three of us are now firmly embedded in the Edinburgh community. As a shop we support a local charity, Tinderbox, which makes musical instruments available to all at local libraries. Outside of Umbrella Vinyl, Josh and Laura are DJs on community radio station EHFM. Nick volunteers for a local charity supporting disadvantaged young people, Childrenโs Holiday Venture; and Laura acts with a local drama group, Leitheatre.
Laura

Laura grew up listening to vinyl โ her first records were by Erasure, Kylie and Alison Moyet among others. Laura has always loved to dance to good music whether in a kitchen or a nightclub and met Josh on a dancefloor in East London!
Since 2016 she has been sharing her love of music from around the globe via her radio show with Josh โ Vinyl Voyages โ firstly in Hong Kong and now in Edinburgh on community radio station EHFM.
Laura and Josh lived in Hong Kong for eight years and met Nick at a music festival where Nick was selling records. Having grown up in Scotland before moving to London and then Hong Kong, Laura loves living in vibrant Edinburgh.
Away from the world of music, Lauraโs background is in compliance within financial services. Laura studied French & Drama and started acting again as a member of Edinburghโs Leitheatre, including performing at the Edinburgh Fringe festival. Lauraโs other great passion is travelling especially when combined with digging for records!
Some of Lauraโs favourite musicians include Dusty Springfield, Esther Phillips, Dionne Warwick, Franรงoise Hardy, Joyce Moreno and Cerrone.

Josh

Joshโs love affair with records began at an early age with a dusty second hand Dansette record player; a birthday gift from his mum that sparked a lifelong passion for record collecting and music. Over the years the thrill of putting the needle on a record and filling a room with music has never diminished!
Joshโs background is in visual art, it was while studying painting at the Royal Collage of Art in London that Josh met Laura, bonding over their shared love of music and travel. Hunts for obscure record shops and galleries have led them to amazing people and places. In 2010 Laura and Josh relocated to Hong Kong where they embarked on their vinyl-only radio show โVinyl Voyagesโ which celebrates their musical finds from around the globe.ย
Through his work as an artist and curator Josh made a name for himself putting on extravagant happenings and developing ambitious projects including sending his own record โPlatinum Metresโ into space via the International Space Station!
Life in Hong Kong sparked an interest in the migration of music and people and for five years Josh researched the contribution of Commonwealth jazz musicians to jazz in Britain at the University of Glasgow. His favourite of these musicians include Joe Harriott, Amancio DโSilva, Shake Keane and Chris McGregor.
Outside of music Josh loves distance running, drawing and painting.

Nick

Nickโs career in finance took him from Edinburgh to London, Japan and Hong Kong โ and Hong Kong is where he fell into second-hand record trading. Selling online and at festivals (Josh and Laura sniffed out his record stall at Clockenflap in 2015) he knew heโd found a thing he loved; the monthly record fairs he organised were legendary bringing together record-traders and collectors alike, local and international โ ably DJโd by Josh and Laura from their vast collections!
Nick loved exploring HKโs underground music scene โ word-of-mouth โsecretโ venues in old factory buildings or hidden away rooms in labyrinthine apartment buildings. To support some of the artists he saw and got to know he created a label releasing records and cassettes, and produced a hard-copy only music zine press : release with Josh and another pal (a copy is part of Hong Kong Heritage Museumโs print collection).
Nick has a taste that incorporates the wild and wonderful from noisy, visceral jazz to the deepest afrobeat funk and craziest electronic experimental explorations. Heโs a regular at local experimental music performances, including Edinburghโs monthly Wavetable.
